CRIB POINT FNC By Jared Newton A BRAND new shiny scoreboard for Crib but it projected the same result as the seniors now 0-3 to open their season with a 50 point loss to Devon Meadows. The seniors started well and ran with Devon for a solid half before being overrun after half time. Avenues to goal are the biggest issue for the seniors who are struggling to apply enough scoreboard pressure to get on top of teams. Brad Arnold was enormous in the middle and snagged three, and Kyle Arnott was also brilliant in his first game back into…

HASTINGS FNC THE Hastings FNC played Frankston Bombers FNC in their third Anzac Day clash at Barclay Oval in what can be best described as a bruising encounter between two of the oldest Clubs in the MPNFL. On a fine day both clubs certainly came to play. The opening term was  fabulous with both sides going toe- to-toe. In the end the Hastings FNC proved too good with an outstanding second half. They put their stamp on the contest and came out 18 point winners. Next week we travel to Devon Meadows in what will be another tough contest for…

MEMORIES of happy holidays at Merricks beach in her married years proved an irresistible attraction to Shoreham resident Dorothy Ellen Johnson as a place to live in her retirement. After moving to the Mornington Peninsula to live at Shoreham House 10 years ago she celebrated her centenary, surrounded by family and friends, on Monday last week. “What a fabulous century she has had,” son Phil Johnson said. “She has experienced everything from steam to electricity, lived through two world wars and the Roaring 20s, danced to rock ‘n’ roll and the twist – she’s seen it all.” Mrs Johnson –…

NEPEAN LEAGUE THE ANZAC Round of football in Nepean League was soured on Saturday when Tyabb midfielder Adrian Clay was airlifted to hospital. At the 30-second mark of the third quarter in the match between the Yabbies and Sorrento, Clay had his head over the footy and was about to pick it up when a teammate came hard off the square and accidentally hit him in the head. Clay laid motionless on the ground as trainers attended to him. The game was called off a short time later as it was obvious that further medical attention was required to assist…

PENINSULA LEAGUE SEAFORD won its second game on the trot in MPNFL Peninsula Division, holding on to beat Bonbeach. The Tigers led by 28 points at the last change after leading by just two points at the long interval, however, the Sharks stormed home in the last to fall short by 11 points, 13.13 (91) to 11.14 (80). Seaford coach Ben Murphy told the RPP Footy Show on Saturday morning that he was confident that his young charges would continue to improve throughout the season. “The guys clearly lacked leadership when I arrived and as far as I was concerned,…

By Craig MacKenzie MORNINGTON continued its recent success against Langwarrin with a 2-1 win in their Anzac clash at Dallas Brooks Park on Sunday. Mornington struck in the 5th minute when livewire striker Wayne Gordon stole in behind the Langy defence and toe-poked the ball past teenage goalkeeper James Foster who was deputising for the injured Robbie Acs. The simmering feud between these fierce local rivals burst into open conflict with a melee in the 33rd minute sparked by a tackle involving Mornington midfielder Paul McEvoy and Langy defender Alex Van Heerwarden. McEvoy was shown a straight red card and…

A DINING setting more in keeping with a restaurant than a ‘soup kitchen’ is enhancing the experience of Mornington Community Meals program participants. Now back at St Peter’s Anglican Church in Albert St, Mornington after renovations, the organisers held a small celebration to mark its return last week. In three years it has provided around 5000 meals to locals experiencing social isolation, as well as local residents who ordinarily wouldn’t be able to afford an evening out. The meals are served by volunteers in what is more of a robust hub of friends enjoying each other’s company, community meals committee…

THREE authors have started a crowdfunding campaign for funds to publish a history of Mt Eliza’s famous Ranelagh Estate. Ranelagh was designed in 1924 by world-renowned American architects, planners and designers Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahoney Griffin, who came to Australia to direct their winning international design for Canberra. During their time in Australia, the Griffins also created town plans for Eaglemont in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs and Castlecrag in Sydney as well as designs for Newman College at the University of Melbourne and the Capitol Theatre in central Melbourne. Ranelagh – A Special Place has been written by Dr…

FED up with having cars parked across their driveways, rubbish strewn in streets and on lawns, and 20-somethings wandering the streets urinating behind bushes,  “concerned residents” in Mt Martha have formed The Pillars Residents Action Group. Theirs is a campaign from the heart, and they are determined to protect their little piece of paradise from what’s become a marauding herd of young people invading the once-pristine shoreline – in ever-growing numbers. As part of their campaign, the group successfully requested young people’s tourism website AWOL – which had listed “Jumping off The Pillars” as one of the ‘Top 20 things…

MORNINGTON Peninsula shire is eyeing a share of $1 billion in state government funding to improve road safety. It is aiming to become the first municipality in Australia to align itself with the TAC’s new Towards Zero campaign. Six fatalities in the shire this year are among an average annual 120 serious injuries from crashes. Four locations have been initially identified to achieve Safe System principle measures or better: Point Nepean Rd, Rye: This commercial area has had four cyclist and five pedestrian casualties in the past five years; Balnarring township: Regular crashes here identify the area as “high risk”…

PUNTERS at the Mornington Racing Club erupted, Monday, when the Tony Noonan-trained Beleura Belle crossed the line first in Race 3, The Eliza Dry Cleaners Plate. And it’s not hard to understand why … The three-year-old is owned by residents of two retirement villages – Beleura Village in Bungower Rd and Peninsula Grange Village in Racecourse Rd – as well as a group of mums from St Thomas More’s Primary School, Mt Eliza. About 100 Social Syndicate members were on course to cheer her on – with their financial support also probably bringing down her odds to even-money favourite in…

ESTABLISHED as a “temporary” school in 1987 and left to take care of itself over the following 30 years, it’s no wonder Mornington Special Development School is dilapidated and run down. Claims of asbestos hidden inside the walls, leaky roofs, run-down portables and substandard facilities don’t paint a pretty picture of the school in what’s acknowledged as being a low socio-economic part of town. That’s not to say the care and welfare of its 33 students is neglected, it’s not, but the surroundings are less than desired by the seven staff and principal David Newport. Despite last week’s trumpeting by…

A CREDIT card stolen from a car parked in the driveway of a house in Robin Pd, Rye, overnight Wednesday 13 April, may have been used to buy petrol for a Ford Ranger utility stolen from outside a house in Koonya Av, Blairgowrie, around the same time. Detective Senior Constable Grant O’Dwyer, of Mornington Peninsula Crime Investigation Unit, said the 2015 grey coloured dual cab ute, registration 1EH-3NY, was seen driving into the Woolworths petrol station, Rye, early Thursday 14 April. CCTV captured images of the man police wish to speak to while he filled up, 6.30am. He then used…

ROSEBUD West residents opposed to changing the suburb’s name to Capel Sound have a month to lodge objections with the Registrar of Geographic Place Names. They can object either by saying the naming authority did not consider the objections during its deliberations, or the proposal does not reasonably conform to the Registrar’s guidelines. Of the 5600 letters sent out, 1065 were returned supporting the name change and 837 were against – a majority of 228. About two-thirds of the letters were not returned. Councillors voted 7:4 to accept the result of the poll at the Monday 11 April meeting. The…

THE state government has signed a memorandum of understanding with Melbourne University to establish a marine research centre in part of the heritage listed former quarantine station despite a master plan for the future use of Point Nepean National Park not being due for release until later this year. The agreement means that the university will receive $2.1m over six years from the National Environmental Science Program towards establishing a National Centre for Coasts and Climate (NCCC). The university says it will provide a $3m “matching investment”. Vice-chancellor Professor Glyn Davis said the university was “happy to be moving forward…

NEPEAN LEAGUE FRANKSTON Bombers were brought back to earth with a thud after being thrashed by Somerville in Nepean Division on Saturday. With wins against Pearcedale and Tyabb in the opening rounds of the season, the Bombers were confident about their chances against last year’s grand finalists. However, the Bombers were never threatening throughout the match, were behind at every change and were blown away in the final quarter to go down by almost 10 goals, 18.9 (117) to 8.15 (63). The scoreboard would suggest that the Bombers were always in the contest, until the final quarter, however, the reality…

PENINSULA LEAGUE CHELSEA celebrated a win against Pines on Saturday at the final siren. The goal umpires said it was a draw. The two time keepers had the Seagulls booting 7.4 in the last quarter. The goal umpires had them booting 7.3. Pines coach Pat Swayne watched the replay of the final quarter on Saturday night after the match and thought that Chelsea had booted four behinds in the last term. Swayne shared that information with Chelsea coach Brett Dunne. Dunne was quick to watch the replay and made his own determination. Chelsea FC Football Manager Mason Stewart confirmed on…

It’s hard to pin down exactly what kind of impact Tex Perkins has had on the Australian music industry, or on music more broadly. He’s not your typical front-man superstar, yet he’d be more widely recognised than the lead singers of most modern-day pop groups. He’s been making music since for more than 30 years, but is barely a smidge over 50 years old. Although he did find his feet and a degree of early success with the group Thug, how did he gain so much fame and notoriety without a prominent campaign vehicle like Jimmy Barnes’ Cold Chisel, INXS’…

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them or the years condemn At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. On every Anzac Day it is customary for these solemn lines, known as “The Ode of Remembrance”, to be recited. Quite often a speaker will then inform the assembly of Australia’s contribution to what was known as The Great War; of how a country of less than five million could put 416,809 men in uniform, over 60,000 of whom were not to return. Official…

OF the 120 listed on the honour roll in Mornington’s Memorial Park, a number were decorated for bravery under fire. One of those was Robert Bates of the Australian Army Medical Corps who returned home with a Military Medal (won at Lone Pine) and  Bar (won at Pozieres.) What makes his record different to the other 119 is that he was a pacifist and never fired a shot during his years of service. ROBERT Bates was born at Kew in 1887, the only son of Alfred and Isabella (nee Bartlett). The war was only a few weeks old when Robert…

BEFORE moving to Mornington the Bates family lived in Frankston and Robert played for that team. The Mornington Standard of 7 September, 1912 carried a lengthy report of proceedings before the Frankston Court of Petty Sessions where “Leonard Incigneri, captain of the Hastings team, and captain of the Richmond team in the League competitions last year, was charged with unlawful assault during the progress of the Frankston and Hastings match at Somerville on 24 August.” The player subject to assault was Robert Bates. Dr Charles Maxwell, the first witness, gave the following evidence: “… Saw the incident that Bates and…
