THE former Hastings Senior Citizens Centre has been refurbished and extended in a $1.4 million redevelopment to provide a new home for seniors and Hastings U3A.
Work on the multi-purpose community hub in Herring Street was supported by $546,000 from the state government. It now offers adult education classes, learning programs and an IT room, as well as indoor and outdoor recreation and social spaces.
The mayor Cr Despi O’Connor described the hub as a “fabulous transformation”.
“We’ve turned a rather dated facility that was not fit for purpose into a wonderful community resource,” she said. “We all know how important social connection and lifelong learning are for our physical and mental health. Hastings now has a one-stop-shop that offers just that. This hub will help our seniors stay healthy and engaged with the world.”
Cr Lisa Dixon said: “Hastings has a large population of seniors, with just over 27 per cent of residents aged over 60. I’m delighted our older residents have this new hub to support their wellbeing.
“I’d like to thank the Victorian Government for its support in helping us bring this project to life. This facility has significantly added to the liveability of the Hastings township.”
