NINE golfers lined up for the first all abilities Get Into Golf event at Mount Martha Golf Course last Friday (22 March).

Following the One Club program initiated by PGA pro Sandy Jamieson, the all abilities session aims to teach golf fundamentals to participants in a relaxed and fun environment.

The program was led by instructors from the club who underwent their own training last month (On course for all abilities at Mt Martha, The News 27/2/24). Accompanied by carers, friends and family, the nine golfers played on two holes which were divided to make four.

Organiser John Bowers, of Mount Martha, said the one club method “worked really well, with all our golfers improving so much by the time we had finished that they could have gone out onto the course proper”.

The golfers had all agreed that the best part of the day was being able to hit the golf ball well and being outdoors. “One golfer said that having a disability can be very isolating for them and their families, but this provided a good social experience,” Bowers said. The trained helpers “exceeded their own expectations of their ability to help”. “Combined with our training, the support of the course and the [Mornington Peninsula Shire] created a fantastic event which, by popular demand, looks like being held each month.”

Bookings for the next all abilities golf day from 1pm to 3pm on Friday 26 April, can be made through Golf Australia at: golf.org.au/getintogolf (follow links to All Abilities at Mt Martha) or mtmarthapublicgc.com.au
