The Mornington Cup will continue on Saturday, but without patrons in attendance.
The decision is in line with the Victorian State of Emergency declaration calling for the cancelling of mass gatherings above 500 people.
“At this point in time all racing at Melbourne Racing Club venues will continue to proceed without spectators, owners and people deemed to be non-essential to the operation of a race day for the foreseeable future. This includes Mornington Cup this weekend,” said the chairman of Melbourne Racing Club, Peter Le Grand.
“Members who have pre-purchased tickets or hospitality packages for events cancelled or closed to the public will be given the option to accept a full refund or exchange for credit for a future event for the duration the State of Emergency is in place.
“Furthermore, in an effort to protect participants, public attendance at trackwork and jump outs at MRC venues will also be closed for the foreseeable future.
Non-racing business at Mornington Racing Club is also facing disruptions. The Peninsula Picnic festival at Mornington scheduled on 28 March, has been postponed for 2020.
“We appreciate your continued support and understanding in what is an unprecedented situation,” said Mr Le Grand.
“We apologise for the disappointment this is causing our members, however your safety, and the safety of our industry participants, patrons and staff remains paramount”.
Saturday’s races from Mornington will be televised on Channel Seven this year.
