MORNINGTON Moggie Rescue is among hundreds of charities, schools and community groups to collectively raise more than $3m through Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS Vic) to date.

By returning containers through the scheme, Mornington Moggie Rescue has so far raised around $3,000 for rescuing and caring for the cats and kittens in their care – tackling litter on the streets while caring for litters of kittens!

When you return eligible drink containers at a CDS Vic refund point, you can choose to donate your refund directly to a registered charity or community group. You can also support local causes by donating containers directly to a group to return.

“These donations directly assist with essential expenses – including veterinary treatment such as desexing, microchipping and other medical care – medical equipment, feeding supplies, as well as food and litter,” said the rescue’s president, Cara Elton-Baker.

The not-for-profit actively promotes CDS Vic on social media, sharing their unique donation barcode for supporters to scan when returning eligible containers, or asking the community to donate their empty containers for the rescue to return.

“Some supporters kindly drop containers off to us for processing while others return them themselves and use our barcode to donate their refund directly to Mornington Moggie Rescue,” said Elton-Baker.

VicReturn CEO Matt Davis said the scheme is a simple, practical way for groups like schools, sporting clubs and charities to build steady, fundraising streams by integrating container collection into everyday routines.

“Many clubs and community groups already collect containers from their members and supporters. Donating those containers through the scheme is a simple way to turn everyday recycling into real benefits for local organisations,” he said.

“It’s a win for the community and a win for the environment.”

To support Mornington Moggie Rescue, return your eligible drink containers at a CDS Vic refund point and select the charity as your payout option. Or contact the rescue to arrange a collection, with drop-off points at Mt Martha, Mt Eliza and Tyabb.

Across Mornington Peninsula Shire, more than 74 million eligible drink containers have been returned though CDS Vic since the scheme launched in November 2023, equating to over $7.4m back to pockets of Victorians.
