FLINDERS community has welcomed a new outdoor fitness facility at Central Park on Cook Street with Flinders Community Outdoor Gym now open and available for public use.
The project represents a milestone for local health, wellbeing, and connection, delivering a free, accessible fitness space designed for all ages and abilities.
The initiative was led by Flinders Community Association, whose volunteers played a central role in the vision, fundraising, and project management. They worked alongside local businesses, community groups, and individuals, as well as Mornington Peninsula Shire and the Community Bank Balnarring and District.
The gym is positioned within a natural park setting and encourages residents and visitors to participate in regular physical activity while enjoying the outdoors.
Committee member Chris Jaegar played a key role in the project. He acknowledged the collective effort behind the facilities and the impact it can have on the community.
“Outdoor exercise is not just about fitness – it’s about feeling better, thinking clearer, and connecting with our surroundings,” said Jaegar.
“We are thrilled to provide a space that supports both physical and mental wellbeing.”
On 22 May, a launch event featured live demonstrations of equipment by volunteers and suppliers, showcasing how the design helps support strength, mobility, and general fitness for users of all abilities. Attendees were able to explore the facility and learn how to use the equipment safely and effectively.
The gym is designed to remove financial barriers and offers an alternative to indoor fitness centres. Community organisers said accessibility is a key feature of the project and they wanted to ensure cost is not a limiting factor in physical activity participation.
Research shows outdoor exercise can improve mood, reduce stress, and enhance overall wellbeing. There are currently more than 300 similar facilities nationwide, with Flinders the most recent community to join the growing movement of active public spaces.
Following the launch, guests were invited to continue celebrations at Flinders Hotel, where drinks and refreshments were provided. The gathering offered an opportunity to acknowledge the many volunteers, donors, and supporters who contributed to the project.
