Liberal candidate for Hastings in the upcoming state election, Frank Schiefler, has announced a Jess Wilson-led Liberal government will invest $6m to help deliver the full redevelopment of the Somerville Recreation Reserve.
The redevelopment will deliver a rebuild of the reserve’s social rooms, grandstand, dedicated female change rooms, public toilets, first aid and administration rooms, additional storage, sealed car parking and the reconfiguration of the netball courts.
Somerville Recreation Reserve is the primary community sporting facility for Somerville, supporting 52 teams across five clubs represented in football, netball, cricket, bowls and tennis. Much of the reserve’s core infrastructure dates back to 1962 and no longer meets the needs of the growing Somerville community.
“Somerville families and sporting clubs have been waiting long enough for the facilities they deserve,” said Schiefler.
“Women and girls have been using temporary change facilities for more than 12 years, while the ageing social rooms, grandstand, toilets and lack of proper storage are simply not good enough for a community of this size.
“Our local clubs and volunteers have already self-funded more than $200,000 into upgrades. The state government needs to step up and deliver the investment that Somerville needs.
“I’m proud to be part of Jess Wilson’s Liberal Team, taking the lead on this important community
project. All levels of government need to come together to fully fund the redevelopment.”
