THE MORNINGTON Peninsula Shire is seeking feedback from the community abouts its Dogs in Public Places policy after dog control signage at nineteen locations across the peninsula was updated.
The council’s Dog in Public Places policy provides a consistent approach to assessing where dogs may be leash-free, on leash, or prohibited.
The sites included are within open spaces of bushland areas that are used for recreation, environmental conservation, and community use.
The council said it must consider a range of factors including environmental values, conservation zoning, habitat connectivity and threatened species while making decisions regarding their Dogs in Public Places policy.
Community engagement will help council understand local views, identify where clearer information may be needed, and will help support how dog controls are explained, implemented and understood at the nineteen locations.
Mayor Cr Stephen Batty said he believes people care deeply about the peninsula and its protected areas, as well as local parks, reserves, beaches, and walking areas.
“This community engagement process is about hearing local perspectives, answering questions and making sure the community understands how dog controls are assessed, particularly where environmental protection is an important factor,” said Batty.
Community engagement is open until 6 November 2026 with the public able to provide their feedback via an online portal.
