Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating following a fatal hit-run in Carrum Downs this morning.

Investigators have been told a red Holden was travelling on Hall Road when the driver struck a number of people near the intersection of Lats Avenue about 7.15am.

One person, who is yet to be formally identified, sustained fatal injuries and a second person was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the vehicle fled the scene on foot and police, with the assistance of the Air Wing are searching for the offender, perceived to be Caucasian in appearance and aged in his 30s.

Investigators have since been told the driver of the Holden was last seen getting into a black Hyundai SUV and the vehicle was last seen travelling east of Ballarto Road about 7.45am.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or with dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

Members of the public are urged to contact Triple Zero (000) if they sight the black Hyundai.
