Detectives are appealing for public assistance after a man was stabbed during New Years Eve celebrations in Sorrento.

It is understood an altercation occurred between a group of males on Point Nepean Road, near Collins Parade and Calcutta Street on 1 January about 2am.

The victim, an 18-year-old man from Melbourne, was stabbed five times during the altercation before he was able to escape and run to the aid of his friends.

He was later taken to hospital with serious upper body injuries and required stiches for his injuries.

The offenders fled the scene prior to police arriving.

Detectives believe up to 10 males were involved, who were perceived to be African, Middle Eastern or Mediterranean in appearance, between 17 and 21-years-old and wearing Nike Tech Fleece clothing in black or grey, and ski masks or hoods.

The main offender has been described as having dark skin, four-inch-long braids, approximately 19-21-years-old and wearing Nike Tech Fleece clothing.

Additionally, investigators are also keen to speak with persons who were in the area at the time and who may have witnessed the altercation.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, has CCTV, dashcam footage or any other information that could assist police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
