WEDNESDAY 7 May 4.30PM

The Australian Electoral Commission has confirmed that a three-candidate-preferred count is currently underway for the electorate of Flinders with the seat still too close to call.

MONDAY 5 May 6.00PM

It is believed there has been no new counting at the Australian Electoral Commission for the seat of Flinders today. Instead, The News understands that they are conducting a numbers of “samples” down to two-candidate-preferred, and will then likely conduct preference allocations on a three-candidate-preferred basis to see if they can distinguish between Labor’s Sarah Race and independent Ben Smith.

Result in Flinders “could take weeks”

SUNDAY 4 May 3.40PM

Election workers have spend the day processing postal votes to get closer to establish the final primary vote tally. Once that is established, the AEC workers can more forward with redistributing preferences.

Currently, 98,502 votes have been counted.

The current results are:

Liberal Party (Zoe McKenzie): 38,893 votes (40.81% of votes)

Labor (Sarah Race): 21,309 votes (22.36% of votes)

Independent (Ben Smith): 21,257 votes (22.30% of votes)

Greens (Adam Frogley): 5617 votes (5.89% of votes)

One Nation (Mike Brown): 5039 votes (5.29% of votes)

Trumpet of Patriots (Jason Smart): 2443 votes (2.56%)

Independent (Joseph Toscano): 744 votes (0.78%)

The result will come down to preferences, which could take days to determine. For more information on the state of play for preferences, visit:

11.40PM

The result in Flinders will not be determined tonight, with the result too close to call.

Preferences will decide the next Member of Flinders, with the potential the final winner may not be called for a day or two.

All eyes are now on the preferences of candidates that did not poll as well as the top three.

While Liberal Zoe McKenzie garnered around 39% of the primary vote, she is at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to preferences. McKenzie can count on One Nation preferences, but beyond that it is less clear.

On the other side of the ledger, both Labor and independent Ben Smith each gained around 23% of the primary vote. This creates a block of 46% assuming preferences from those that voted Labor would preference Smith above the Liberals and vice-versa.

Looking down the ticket, we know that the Greens preference Smith. The situation is much less clear with the Trumpet of Patriots with the how-to-vote-card controversially placing Liberal Zoe McKenzie last. If voters for ToP followed the how-to-vote-card suggested by the party, it could see preferences heading to Smith or Labor above McKenzie.

11.25PM

Ben Smith’s primary vote has moved ahead of Labor’s again.
