Independents for Mornington Peninsula have announced they are stepping up their search for a candidate for the state seat of Nepean, after the news of Sam Groth’s resignation and the forthcoming by-election.
President of Independents for Mornington Peninsula, Phil Riley, told The News they had been searching for candidate for this year’s state election since November, but the by-election had created a “new urgency”.
“The voters of Nepean will be forced to the polls twice in eight months,” said Riley.
“Once again, voters of the Mornington Peninsula find themselves paying the price for Liberal Party incompetence.
“This by-election isn’t about Sam Groth – it’s about a Liberal party so consumed by internal chaos that our community is left without stable representation. The voters of Nepean shouldn’t have to clean up the mess of Liberal Party infighting.
“It’s rumoured that the Liberal Party will parachute in a candidate from outside of the electorate; and the Labor Party won’t even bother to stand a candidate.
“The voters of Nepean deserve better. Nepean deserves the opportunity to vote for a representative from their community, who is free from party politicking, who can serve the community exclusively, and finally deliver the much-needed investments that have been lacking for decades.”
Riley said this election is about putting the peninsula first and getting the representation the community deserves.
“We are searching widely for the right candidate and will only proceed if that person reflects the values and priorities of the community,” said Riley.
