As expected after last night’s preselection as the Liberal candidate for the upcoming Nepean by-election, Marsh has taken leave from his duties as both Mornington Peninsula Shire mayor and Briars Ward councillor, effective immediately.

A statement from shire CEO, Mark Stoermer, said “I have been advised by Mayor Cr Anthony Marsh of his intention to take leave to contest the upcoming Nepean by-election”.

“Cr Marsh will not perform council duties or attend meetings between now and the by-election to be held on May 2, 2026.

“Deputy Mayor Paul Pingiaro will act as Mayor during this time and has also agreed to be the point of contact for residents in the Briars Ward.

“The Shire’s focus will remain on delivering tangible and positive outcomes for our residents.”

In the absence of Marsh, Mornington Peninsula Shire council will operate with only ten councillors. In the case of a tied vote on a matter, the chair, which will be Pingiario unless he is unable to attend a meeting, will have the deciding vote.

If Marsh is successful in the by-election, he would be required to resign from his councillor role. His resignation would trigger a by-election for Briars Ward.
