THE special connection between Peninsula Dolphins and HMAS Cerberus saw the men’s senior team take to the field at Cerberus for the first time this season to take on The Frankston Raiders last Saturday afternoon (25 July)
It was a breezy afternoon, and with no rain to speak of there was a good-sized crowd for both sides.
However, the Peninsula Dolphins had a lot to fight for, beyond a win for the home crowd.
The team has been working hard this season to control the match through the middle of the field and using their forwards to control the ruck to grind out tough wins.
This week they got to the level they know they can produce, controlling the tempo of the game both in attack and defence and keeping the error rate low throughout the match. It was an absolute battle on the field that at times became heated, including the Raiders fullback being sent off for dissent late in the second half.
It’s a tough way to win games, but the team’s determination at the change of every set saw The Dolphins hold off the Frankston Raiders with a final score of 16 points to 4.
After the match enemies became brothers of the game once again with the Peninsula Dolphins and Cerberus Navy Base putting on dinner and a few drinks for both teams, club staff and friends taking the heat out of the game but leaving both clubs looking forward to the next time they meet.
The women’s Peninsula Dolphins senior rugby league tag side played on Sunday (26 July) against Sunshine Cowboys at Fregon Reserve in Clayton.
Although they didn’t win this week, they pushed The Cowboys all the way finally going down 22 -10.
The training they are putting in is starting to show fruit, with some glimpses of what they want to achieve being on display through the match.
Although we are past halfway through the season the team believe they are still capable of playing better and getting some wins to finish strong this season.
