MORNINGTON Football and Netball Club’s match-day barbecue duo, Kellie Pitt and Jenette Holcombe, have been named Week 13 winners in Bunnings’ national Legend of the Tongs competition, and are now chasing the $25,000 grand prize.
Legend of the Tongs is a nationwide search to recognise and reward the local community legends who fire up the barbecue every weekend, serving up snags in bread to raise much-needed funds for their clubs.
Known around the club as the “Snag Hags”, Pitt and Holcombe have run the club’s barbecue for around three years, after deciding to start fundraising for the club’s netball program.
“We don’t get any gate money from people that come and watch the netballers because they can go and watch from the other side of the court,” said Pitt.
The pair’s fathers have both been involved with the club for around 40 years, and their daughters now play netball together.
The “Snag Hags” name came about one night over drinks, and stuck. Pitt said the weekly win from Bunnings – a barbecue prize pack including a six-burner barbecue and marquee – came as a surprise.
“Jeanette’s husband is the vice president at the club, and he’s also one of the head footy coaches. He nominated us, unbeknown to us,” said Pitt.
The club is now in the running to be crowned overall “Legend of the Golden Tongs,” which would bring $25,000 in Bunnings products and materials, along with two tickets to the AFL Grand Final. Pitt and Holcombe both follow AFL closely, and said the prospect of a Grand Final trip added extra excitement to the competition.
Holcombe said the winnings would go towards practical extras for volunteers across all levels of the club.
“Chairs for the girls, and even cleaning products and things like ladders and trestle tables,” said Holcombe.
“Anything that we can think of that can make everyone’s life a bit easier.”
Holcombe pre-sets everything at Thursday night training, before the pair arrive between 7am and 8am on game day Saturdays to set up the barbecue, with help from other volunteers who put up marquees and prepare the courts. Sausages go on sale from around 8.40am.
This year the “Snag Hags” added handmade player badges to their fundraising, giving families the chance to buy a badge featuring a photo of their own club member.
“We’ve got these little badges we make for all the footballers and netballers,” said Holcombe.
“We’ve sold nearly 400 now.”
Pitt and Holcombe are also training up the next generation, a group of daughters and friends nicknamed “The Hagettes,” who pitch in on game day running errands, from grabbing extra bread to keeping the sauce bottles topped up.
“They’re like our little apprentices. We’re training them for when we retire,” said Pitt.
Members of the public will be able to help decide the competition’s two Community Choice winners, who each score a trip for two to the AFL Grand Final. Nominated legends, including Pitt and Holcombe, will be posted to the Bunnings website on 23 August, with voting open to the public until 6 September.
