MEMBER for Hastings, Paul Mercurio, has announced a re-elected Carroll Labor government will invest $5m to support a new pavilion and redeveloped grounds at Somerville Recreation Reserve.
“Currently, the reserve’s pavilion is outdated. Facilities haven’t kept up with demand as participation grows among women and girls,” said a press release sent to The News.
“That’s why Labor will back the local council and deliver $5 million towards a brand-new pavilion and upgraded grounds – helping bring to life the new masterplan.
“The current facility was built at a time when sport was largely designed around men’s participation.
“Labor’s investment will deliver modern change rooms everyone can use.
“This upgrade backs in the clubs that call Somerville Reserve home, like Somerville Football Netball Club, Somerville Cricket Club and Somerville Netball Club.”
“Labor knows our local clubs provide a place where members, supporters and volunteers come together. That’s why Labor is backing upgrades that will help people of all ages and abilities get involved in community sport.
“Labor backs community sport. A Liberal-One Nation Coalition Government would cut it.”
Mercurio told The News he had also been proud to secure over $500,000 in funding for the Somerville Reserve over the last four years including to fund a masterplan for the reserve’s future.
