New train station up and running

THE redeveloped Mordialloc Station is now in operation, with regular services restored to the Frankston railway line.

After weeks of around-the-clock works, the new station opened late last month. Trains are now running to the station via the rail bridges over McDonald Street in Mordialloc, and Station Street in Aspendale.

Buses replaced trains between Cheltenham and Frankston from 30 April to 18 May while works were being undertaken. Altered traffic conditions around the project sites sparked major safety concerns among commuters (“Level crossing works spark safety fears”, The Times 21/5/2026).

A statement from Big Build Victoria read that the project has removed another three level crossings from Victorian roads.

“Together with the Bear Street level crossing that closed permanently in August last year, about 26,000 vehicles travelled through these level crossings every day, with drivers facing delays when the boom gates were down for up to 40 minutes in the morning peak. Getting rid of these crossings will also boost safety by permanently separating trains from vehicles and pedestrians and cyclists, with one death and 12 near misses recorded across the 3 sites since 2016,” Big Build Victoria said. “In total, 91 level crossings have been removed across Melbourne since 2015, making roads safer by preventing 119 crashes and near misses each year and cutting commute times by eliminating 60 hours of boom gate down time in the morning peak.

“The new premium Mordialloc Station features entrances at both ends of the station, lift and stair access, a passenger waiting room, toilets, and seating, and a new one-kilometre walking and cycling path within the station precinct. With trains back on the Frankston Line, passengers will benefit from a new timetable with 12 extra weekly services, including trains every five minutes or better during peak periods.”

Works on the surrounding precinct are expected to continue for the next few months, including work to “restore roads and kerbs, remove barriers and finish fencing works; complete landscaping at Mordialloc and Aspendale; completing rail passenger parking at Mordialloc Station; new parking on Albert Street, Mordialloc; and 30 new parking spaces and a turning circle at the end of Station Street, Aspendale.”

The state government plans to remove all Frankston line level crossings by 2032.
