RUGBY LEAGUE
By David Burke
On a wet and windy Saturday night (13 June), the Peninsula Dolphins third grade men’s team played the South East Titans at Greaves Reserve in Dandenong.
After coming off a loss going into the bye round the team coach challenged the squad to work on ball control and line speed.
The challenge was answered with a great display of ball control in greasy, wet conditions and with defence that kept turning up for each other.
With a few tweaks in the attacking structure over the fortnight off the team put an impressive 24 points to 6 scoreline on the South East Titans keeping the Dolphins’ third grade men’s side on the top of the ladder.
The men’s squad don’t just work for each other. They have been taking time to assist in coaching the Dolphins’ under 12s team and the women’s over 16 tag.
The under 12s team and parents turned up in numbers in the wet to show their appreciation for the men’s side, creating a supportive and fun club atmosphere from the lower grades to the top.
And hard work has paid off for Peninsula Dolphins women’s team.
On Sunday afternoon (14 June) they bounced back into the winners circle with a close 20-16 point victory over the Geelong Sharks at Arthur Beachley reserve in Sunshine.
With the coach away during the bye the team took it upon themselves to dig deep at training and focus on set plays and communication.
The efforts really paid off. It was a tight contest through the first half but the skills they have been working on saw them dominate field position in the second half.
As a unit they are extremely proud of the effort they put in over the last fortnight at training and with the work getting the results they are already calling “bring on next week”.
