RUGBY LEAGUE
By David Burke
Last Saturday afternoon (20 June) the Peninsula Dolphin’s third grade men’s side made the trek to AJ Davis reserve, home of the Northwest Wolves in Airport West to play against the Bendigo Crushers.
After a week of rain the field was more suited to monster trucks than rugby league.
The wet and muddy field made it very heavy and greasy under foot, making gaining meters very hard in a low scoring game.
With the Peninsula Dolphins placing pride in their defence and playing with energy in the back half of the game the conditions worked for them with the final score being 10-4 keeping the side strongly placed on top of the ladder for another week.
On Sunday afternoon (21 June) the Peninsula Dolphins women’s over 16 tag team headed out to Arthur Beachley reserve in Sunshine to take on the Geelong Sharks in a battle of the bays.
In muddy conditions again, the team secured back to back wins showing their training is improving a new team’s performance and consistency.
In what has become the standard for the senior teams at the Peninsula Dolphins the girls placed an absolute premium on defensive structure to get them over the line at full time.
The score reflected the defensive efforts and ground condition with only a conversion splitting the difference between the teams.
The Peninsula Dolphins senior women’s team beat the Geelong Sharks 10-8.
The Peninsula Dolphins men’s and women’s senior teams both got wins this weekend but Sunday (21 June) belonged to the kids.
In one of their annual shows of support for grass roots rugby league, Melbourne Storm were kind enough to give tickets to all the junior clubs for kids and parents of every team to not only watch their game but also do a lap of AAMI Park before the game against Canberra Raiders that Storm won 42-20.
The kids had a great day out and felt honoured to be on the same ground they watch their heroes play on. The experience making the dream of playing there someday feel more real and obtainable.
