SPEED limits on several Mornington Peninsula roads will be lowered to “improve safety, and make the speed zones clearer and easier to comply with”, according to VicRoads.
The roads have been identified as having inconsistencies with varying speed limits, which the authority admitted “causes confusion”.
The affected roads are:
Mornington-Tyabb Rd, east of Peninsula Link. The 3.5km stretch of Mornington-Tyabb Rd, east of Peninsula Link, to be cut to 80kph to match the existing speed limit on either side of this stretch. VicRoads estimates the journey along Mornington-Tyabb Rd will take an extra 21 seconds.
Arthurs Seat Rd, William Rd to Cloud St. The speed limit along the 2.5km stretch of Arthurs Seat Rd, east of William Rd to Cloud St, will be cut to 80kph to match the current speed on this road (80kph to the east and 60kph to the west). The journey will take an extra 22 seconds.
Balnarring Rd, Old Moorooduc Rd to Warrawee Rd. The speed limit along Balnarring Rd, from Old Moorooduc Rd to Warrawee Rd, will be cut to 80kph. The journey along Balnarring Rd will take an extra 90 seconds.
Bittern Dromana/Dunns Creek Rd, east of Tubbarubba Rd to Coolart Rd. The speed limit along Bittern Dromana/Dunns Creek Rd, east of Tubbarubba to Coolart Rd, will be cut to 80kph. The journey along Balnarring Rd will take an extra 76 seconds.
VicRoads regional director Aidan McGann said the changes had been made after consultation with Mornington Peninsula Shire and Victoria Police. “We have made the decision to lower these speed limits to improve safety, make the speed zones clearer and easier to comply with,” he said.
“The crash history on these roads demonstrates a poor safety record and, along with community feedback, the decision to lower the speeds has been made in the best interests of all road users,” Mr McGann said.
“The reduction in speed will have minimal impacts on travel times, with only marginal increases in the time it will take to make your journey.”
