THE Greens have launched their Nepean by-election campaign, with more than 60 supporters gathering in Blairgowrie on Sunday (29 March).
Mornington Peninsula mum Sianan Healy is the Greens candidate, vowing to be a true community representative in Parliament if elected, stating that “Nepean shouldn’t risk Liberals and One Nation who will work for their corporate donors, not their community.”
Healy works for a non-profit in women’s health and has a background in research and education in the university sector.
“Together we can build a better and brighter future – one in which we have a say in decisions that affect our natural environment, our living standards, our work and schools and homes,” said Healy.
“Big corporations are ripping off our community and making massive profits while people are falling further behind. The Liberals and One Nation can’t stand up to big corporations and billionaires when they’re funded by them.”
“We’re building a movement that starts in our homes, backyards and beaches – a movement that sends a message all the way to Spring Street: that we won’t be taken for granted anymore, and that Nepean is ready for change.
“The Greens have the power to make a difference in politics, to build coherent, united representation in Parliament that can lead to real change.”
With less than five weeks until the Nepean by-election, Healy joins another five candidates who have signalled their intention to run for the Nepean by-election: Anthony Marsh (Liberal Party), Tracee Hutchinson (Independents of Mornington Peninsula endorsed candidate), Darren Hercus (One Nation), Peter Angelico (Libertarian), and Milton Wilde (End Mass Immigration – Reform AU).
Nominations for the by-election close at 12 noon on Thursday 9 April for registered political party candidates and 12 noon on Friday 10 April for independent candidates, with only three candidates having officially nominated so far according to the VEC website. Those candidates are Milton Wilde, Peter Angelico and Tracee Hutchinson.
Liberal Party candidate Anthony Marsh has continued door knocking, again joined by some big names from the Victorian Liberal Party.
In a sign of the importance of the Nepean contest to the Liberal Party, leader Jess Wilson was again down knocking on doors on Thursday, with the pair joined by Upper House MP Renee Heath.
The deputy leader David Southwick joined Heath and Marsh over the weekend to continue campaigning.
In a social media post, Marsh wrote: “I’ve been overwhelmed by the support from locals here in Nepean”.
“The road to change starts here, and this by-election is an important opportunity to get results for our community.”
Independents for Mornington Peninsula’s endorsed candidate Tracee Hutchison has also been putting in the hard yards letterboxing and door knocking over the last week stating on social media: “This campaign is about making sure our community is properly represented because, for too long, we’ve been overlooked”.
“Fuel costs are high, public transport isn’t nearly good enough in Nepean, and right now we don’t have a local MP standing up for this community.
“That’s not good enough, and it’s why I’m running.”
One Nation’s Darren Hercus held a breakfast barbeque at Sorrento on Sunday morning, encouraging people to come past and have a bite and a chat.
