MORNINGTON Peninsula Legacy Club is gearing up to celebrate Legacy Week from 29 August to 5 September.
The nationally celebrated week is Legacy’s main fundraising campaign and seeks to raise money to help support beneficiaries.
Mornington Peninsula Legacy currently supports 515 beneficiaries on the peninsula.
President Chuck Connors said Legacy helps beneficiaries grow and thrive despite adversity by providing services such as education, relief for financial hardship, and programs for easing social isolation.
“Mornington Peninsula Legacy provide a range of services and support and care for families over a large area, commencing at Chelsea, running through Frankston, Mornington, Mt Eliza, Mt Martha, down to Portsea, and across to Hastings,” said Connors.
During Legacy Week, there will be 18 locations around the peninsula selling bears, lapel pins, pens, and wristbands.
“All the money raised during Legacy Week will go to Mornington Peninsula Legacy,” said Connors.
He said Legacy Week relies on the support of local businesses to help raise funds.
There will also be a charity golf event held at Devilbend Golf Club on 4 September.
“We try and make it a celebration on the peninsula of all the people that support Legacy,” said Connors.
“Our goal is to try and raise $1,000, but the day’s aim is about camaraderie and getting people there and saying thank you.”
This year, Rosebud RSL and Mornington Legacy are introducing a memorial trophy in honour of Bruce Turner OAM, who passed away in April. The trophy will be presented to the overall winner on the day by a family member.
“Bruce was a legend on the peninsula by working so long in the advocacy field,” said Connors.
“He helped veterans and our beneficiaries.”
Turner was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his long service to Rosebud RSL. Connors said he helped many of their widows achieve their gold card, which provides them with a number of benefits.
“We haven’t been able to replace Bruce,” said Connors.
“I don’t think you’d find many people that have a bad word to say about what Bruce has been able to achieve on behalf of veterans and their families.”
The golf event will include a raffle, prizes, and a Hyundai Kona for the first hole-in-one on the Par 3 13th.
