MORNINGTON Peninsula bus drivers are experiencing difficult and dangerous working conditions as bus stops are becoming increasingly unsafe to navigate due to potholes.
Safety Beach resident Wayne Marshall, who is a public bus driver, told The News bus stops on the peninsula are deteriorating and have been neglected making them unsafe to stop at.
Marshall, who has been a bus driver since 2020, believes deteriorating bus stops have been an increasing issue for well over twelve months.
Marhsall is a regular driver on the 884-bus route which covers over sixty kilometres between Frankston Railway Station and Portsea, and points outs two stops that he believes are particularly unsafe – St Johns Wood Rd/Point Nepean Road north bound, and Safety Beach sailing club/Marine Drive north bound.
Marshall has had to resort to stopping several metres before the bus stops due to the condition of the road in front of the stops
“The side of the road has crumbled to a state that it’s becoming increasingly unsafe for passengers getting on the bus and passengers already on the bus,” said Marshall.
“With how big the potholes are and with the rain we’ve been having, it just makes it very difficult to navigate into the stops.”
The buses that operate on the 884 routes are articulated buses, also commonly known “bendy busses”, which Marshall says makes the stops even more difficult to navigate.
“It’s just a nightmare. You try not to hurt anyone, because if you’re in the back of the bus, the trailer pivots violently,” said Marshall
“I’m trying to look back at the passengers and make sure they’re okay while also trying to navigate my way out of the stop as well. It’s just an intolerable situation.
Marshall has raised the issue with Ventura, the bus operation company he works for, and reported the poor condition of the bus stops with VicRoads, as well as to Nepean MP Anthony Marsh and Flinders MP Zoe McKenzie.
