MORNINGTON MP Chris Crewther has announced an elected Liberal/Nationals government will fund $1.5m towards an upgrade of outdoor facilities at Mount Martha Primary School, delivering a new covered all-weather shelter, upgraded courts and refurbishment of the school’s synthetic oval.
Crewther said he had been fighting for investment in the school’s facilities after visiting Mount Martha Primary School in August and meeting with school leadership, students, school council representatives, Mount Martha Basketball Club and Mount Martha Netball Club.
“Mount Martha Primary School is an important part of our local community, and its outdoor facilities are used every day by students as well as local sporting clubs,” said Crewther.
The project will include:
• A new covered all-weather shelter over the outdoor court area
• Upgrades to two outdoor courts
• Refurbishment of the existing synthetic oval
• Improved water management to help address flooding around existing play spaces and facilities
• A multipurpose space for learning, play, assemblies, wellbeing programs and community sport
• A dedicated local training base for Mount Martha Basketball Club and Mount Martha Netball Club
The school has 525 students, while the sporting facilities will also support hundreds of local basketball and netball participants.
Crewther said the project would provide benefits well beyond the school gates.
“This is a genuine school and community project, instigated by students, the school, parents and local clubs,” said Crewther.
“The new covered space will allow students to learn and play outdoors in all weather conditions while providing much-needed shade and UV protection.
“It will also provide a fantastic training base for Mount Martha Basketball and Mount Martha Netball, supporting participation in sport for children and young people across our community.
“The ageing synthetic oval is one of the school’s most heavily used outdoor facilities, so refurbishing it will improve safety and ensure it can continue to be used by students and the wider community for years to come.
“I have been fighting for this investment because our local schools deserve modern, safe and practical facilities that support learning, health, wellbeing and community sport. These upgrades will strengthen an important community asset for current and future generations.”
