PEACHY Keen Ceramics in Mt Eliza will open its doors to the public as part of the annual Australian Ceramics Open Studio weekend.
On 7 November, founder Cait is inviting peninsula locals to see behind the scenes of her ceramic studio.
Studio members’ work will be available to purchase, as well as mini-workshops and refreshments on offer.
Australian Ceramics Open Studio weekend is an annual event where potters, ceramic artists, and sculptors can share their art through demonstrations and conversations.
Cait said the weekend is a great opportunity for people to come and see what they offer, get a feel for the studio and teachers, and get a feel for clay.
“It’s throughout Australia, and lots of pottery studios and ceramic studios are opening their doors for people to come in, have a look around, and get a feel for what we do and the classes we offer,” said Cait.
Cait said ceramics was the first creative form she found she was good at.
“I always felt really creative, but I was never good at anything,” said Cait.
“I was terrible at painting; I’m still drawing stick figures, and so when I found clay, I was like, this is actually my medium that I’m meant to work with.”
Cait started ceramics back in 2018, when she was looking for something to do for herself.
“Something that I’m hearing a lot from my students is that they’re finally at a point where they can find something for themselves to do,” said Cait.
“It’s really grounding. You’re working with the earth, and you walk away feeling really calm and relaxed, and you’re tired from the process of making your piece, and your mind is clear. It’s magical.”
She opened Peachy Keen Ceramics in 2022 and now runs classes six days a week.
On Sundays, they offer teen classes and workshops, where people can bring their own ideas and make what they like.
Cait said the main block for ceramic beginners is thinking they won’t be able to do it.
“It’s not true,” said Cait.
“It’s about learning the clay and learning how to work with the clay, and then you can make whatever you want; that’s the key thing.”
Cait said Australian Ceramics have a directory where people can find any open studios near them on 7 and 8 November.
