MORNINGTON Peninsula Shire has confirmed what changes will be implemented following a comprehensive review.
From next year, libraries will be open longer (including weekends), the library van will be out and about more frequently, and digital collections will be boosted.
The shire said the review confirmed libraries are highly valued community spaces that play an important role in learning, literacy, digital access, and connection.
Staff members were consulted before the changes were finalised and have expressed concerns about the process (“Shire finalises library service changes after review”, The News, 26/10/26).
The shire said there has been no reduction in the number of full-time equivalent staff roles.
Mayor Cr Stephen Batty said the review provided a clear roadmap to ensure the libraries continue to evolve alongside community needs.
“Our community told us how much they value the shire’s library service and what they want to see more of. The shire has listened and responded to that feedback,” said Batty.
“Our libraries are much more than places to borrow books. They are welcoming community spaces where people learn, connect, discover new ideas and access important services.”
Batty said the review outlines an exciting vision for the future.
“Through longer opening hours, improved online resources, expanded mobile library access and continued investment in programs and collections, we’re creating a library service that will serve our community for many years to come,” said Batty.
The independent review drew on extensive research, service analysis and consultation with more than 600 community members, library staff and council employees.
It found digital borrowing has increased by 61 per cent, but demand remains strong for in-person programs, technology access and community connection.
The shire said the proposed future model will retain the local, community-focused experience residents know and value while introducing improvements that make services more accessible and connected across the entire library network.
Changes will be implemented in phases over several months next year.
These changes include longer library opening hours, an expansion of the Our Library Van, expanded digital online resources, more support for digital literacy and technology access, and improved customer service, programming, and community learning opportunities.
The current Somerville Library lease expires in March 2027.
The shire said it is committed to continuing services at Somerville and is working to extend the lease for 12 months.
This will allow time to complete a thorough review of the service and community programming needs, in consultation with community members.
