REGIS Mornington resident John Taylor was surrounded by family and friends on 10 February to celebrate his centenary.
John’s journey began in the sunny streets of Merbein, where he attended Merbein West Primary School before continuing on to Mildura High School. Growing up in a lively household of four siblings, one brother and two sisters, John learned the value of connection, laughter, and resilience early on.
John began his working life at just 15, stepping into the role of Junior Clerk with the railways in Merbein, a formative start that set the tone for his dedication and reliability. By age 18, his commitment and skills earned him a transfer to the bustling Toorak goods shed, where he continued excelling in the same role.
Beyond the workplace, John cultivated a deep love for gardening, with roses claiming the top spot in his floral affections. Known for his encyclopedic knowledge of rose care, particularly his expert pruning techniques, John finds joy in sharing insights with anyone keen to learn.
John met wife Gwyn in 1947 through a church youth group in Merbein.
They married in 1950, beginning their life together, and eight years later they moved to Tasmania where John began his church ministry.
Their love grew into a family of five, with three daughters born during their time in Tasmania.
For more than three decades, John served as a devoted pastor from the quiet charm of Tasmania to the welcoming community of Mooroolbark.
