MORNINGTON Yacht Club’s Schnapper Point Regatta 2026 concluded on Sunday after a competitive weekend of racing that drew strong participation from sailors across Victoria in the 29ers, ilcas, i14s, 420s, sabres, 125s and optis.
Held on 14–15 February, the long-running regatta attracted over 120 competitors, supported by more than 70 volunteers, officials, and race management personnel.
This year’s event carried added significance as Mornington Yacht Club celebrates its 80th anniversary, while the Schnapper Point Regatta itself continues a tradition spanning more than 40 years on Port Phillip.
The regatta program also incorporated the ILCA Victorian 2026 Under-21 Championship, proudly sponsored by Ronstan, along with the 2026 Musto Skiff Australian National Championship, held from 12–15 February.
Sailors contended with light and highly variable winds throughout the weekend, particularly on Sunday when a forecast mid-morning lull created difficult racing conditions. Despite this, organisers successfully completed multiple races across the fleets, with shortened courses and tactical decision-making playing a key role.
Mornington Yacht Club, Principal Race Officer Chris Jackson, said the conditions highlighted the skill and resilience of competitors.
“Schnapper Point always delivers interesting racing, and this year was no exception. The sailors showed great patience and tactical awareness in very challenging conditions.”
The regatta concluded with four races completed on Day 2, allowing competitors to capitalise on improved afternoon breezes.
Notable performances included strong racing across the fleets, with sibling rivalry again on display as Callum and Aiden Simmons competed closely in the Radial fleet. It was great to see female sailor, Ashlea Tan record a standout result in the 4.7 fleet, while the Green Fleet completed an impressive series across the weekend.
