THE refurbishment of the original Frankston Hospital building is on schedule to be completed early next year.
The state government’s 2026-2027 budget allocated funds to the continuing project, with $42 million set to be spent on works in the upcoming financial year. The estimated total budget for the complete redevelopment remains at $1.12 billion.
The budget papers read that the new hospital tower has been operating since the start of the year. “The Frankston Hospital Redevelopment (now known as Peninsula University Hospital) opened its new tower on 20 January 2026. It is the largest ever health infrastructure investment in Melbourne’s south-east,” it read.
“The redevelopment has transformed services at the hospital, delivering a new tower with 12 levels of clinical services and new main entrance, 130 more beds, new spaces for mental health and oncology services and 15 new operating theatres. This includes new maternity, obstetrics and paediatric wards, a women’s clinic and a special care nursery. An expansion of the emergency department includes a new mental health, alcohol and other drugs hub and a dedicated paediatric zone, providing specialist care for patients, families and carers.”
The project also encompassed works on the existing building. The budget papers read that “the existing hospital is being refurbished for completion in early 2027 and the childcare centre and community centre will be completed by early 2028.
“The redeveloped hospital has capacity to treat approximately 35 000 more patients each year.”
