Mornington Peninsula Shire Council has elected Cr Stephen Batty as its new mayor, after a dramatic contest for the top job.
Initially, councillors Paul Pingiaro and Kate Roper nominated for the role but, just like the last meeting to elect a mayor, the votes were tied five all.
The chair of the meeting, shire CEO Mark Stoermer, the adjouned the meeting for 15 minutes to allow discussions to take place.
On resumption of the meeting, when nominations were called for Cr David Gill nominated Batty, and Cr Andrea Allen nominated Pingiaro.
Put to a vote, Batty garnered six votes, clinching the mayoral role. Pingiaro will continue in his role as deputy mayor.
“It is a privilege to be elected as mayor to represent our community at such an important time for the Mornington Peninsula,” said Batty.
“I look forward to working closely with my fellow councillors, our community and council officers to continue advocating for the issues that matter most to our residents and delivering positive outcomes across the peninsula.”
Chief Executive Officer Mark Stoermer congratulated Batty on his election.
“On behalf of the organisation, I congratulate Cr Stephen Batty on being elected mayor of Mornington Peninsula Shire,” said Stoermer.
“We look forward to supporting the mayor and council as they continue delivering important services, projects and advocacy outcomes for our community.”
