FOLLOWING their critically acclaimed, sell-out summer season of Romeo and Juliet, the Mornington Peninsula Theatre Company (MPtc) returns this July with a captivating new production of Karel Čapek’s 1920 masterpiece, R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots).
Running from Wednesday, 8 July to Sunday, 12 July at Bellamy Hall on Albert Street in Mornington, this edge-of-your-seat drama marks an exciting thematic shift for the beloved local not-for-profit company. Founded by passionate Peninsula theatre visionaries Jonty Reason and Donna Johnstone, MPtc has become a cultural staple by stripping classic stories down to their raw essence through a modern, minimalist style.
While R.U.R. famously introduced the word “robot” to the world over a century ago, its brilliant blend of sharp satire and darkly prophetic comedic insight still feels incredibly relevant today. As daily news headlines dominate our conversations with the rapid rise of artificial intelligence, R.U.R. offers a deeply engaging and timely cautionary tale about technology outpacing ethics and what truly defines humanity.
The gripping storyline follows factory executives as their synthetic workers begin to question their purpose, sparking a thrilling revolution.
So, Peninsula theatre goers, if you’re looking for a memorable winter outing, evening performances commence at 7:00 PM, and a convenient 2:00 PM Sunday matinee on Sunday 12th July is ideal for those who prefer daytime travel across the Peninsula.
To ensure a smooth experience, Bellamy Hall offers loads of free parking nearby and accessible facilities. Please note that as Bellamy Hall is a historic community space, guests are very welcome to bring along a personal cushion for extra comfort during the show.
