SOUTHERN Peninsula Sharks guard Seth White became the first player to crack 50 points in a Big V Youth League 3 Men’s game this season, putting up 51 against Maccabi at Rosebud Stadium on Saturday 20 June.
The 18-year-old Dromana Secondary College student finished with 12 three-pointers as the Sharks secured a strong win over a side that had beaten them earlier in the season.
The groundwork for the night was laid that morning, when White attended a mindset session with Sharks assistant coach, Andrew Cipriano, who also works with athletes on the mental side of their game.
“I just felt different while I was playing,” said White. “I felt like I wanted the ball in my hands, and I had 16 points at half-time. Then probably halfway through the third, when I hit four or five threes, I knew I was going to score a lot.”
Coach Matt Brasser said the performance was years in the making.
“A 51-point game doesn’t happen by accident,” said Brasser. “It’s the result of years of consistent effort, commitment and preparation.”
White has been with the Sharks since the club’s under-14 program, and credits one-on-one training with Australian-born NBL star Mitch Creek, who now plays for the Vancouver Bandits, with sharpening his game.
“Mitch helped me a lot with my footwork, my shooting, everything,” said White.
He also cited Cipriano and Brasser as key influences.
“Andrew works with us on the mindset side – how to not doubt yourself. That obviously worked really well,” said White. “Matt has so much faith in me to shoot the ball. I couldn’t score that much without him.”
White’s teammates also revelled in the moment. When he walked into the locker room after the game, they were ready for him.
“They seemed just as excited as I was,” said White. “They were drowning me in water.”
As well as playing basketball, White is an A-grade referee, assistant-coach for a Victorian Junior Basketball League under-18 team, and is completing his VCE with plans to play college basketball in the United States next year.
