CONCERNED residents are calling for safety improvements at the intersection of Mornington-Tyabb Rd and Racecourse Rd.
A petition has attracted hundreds of signatures from people concerned about the dangers faced by cyclists, pedestrians, and motorists.
The petition was organised by Paddy Fricker and sponsored by Mornington MP Chris Crewther. It has attracted over 700 signatures across hard-copy and online forms.
Crewther said the petition will be lodged to Parliament once it has surpassed 1000 signatures.
“The intersection of Mornington-Tyabb Rd and Racecourse Rd is one of the busiest and most concerning road safety locations in our community,” said Crewther.
“Every day, pedestrians, cyclists, school students, older residents and people with disabilities are required to navigate an unsafe intersection.”
He said pedestrians are often left standing on narrow strips waiting for heavy traffic to pass in both directions.
“The safety concerns at this intersection have been raised with authorities for many years, yet meaningful action has not occurred.”
Crewther said residents have repeatedly told him how vulnerable they feel when crossing at the intersection.
“No family should have to worry about the safety of their children, parents or grandparents simply trying to cross a road in their local community,” said Crewther.
“Mornington Peninsula is a growing community, with the population expected to increase significantly in coming decades and swell even further during holiday periods. If we do not act now, the challenges at this intersection will only worsen.”
Fricker, who has lived in the area for five years, said concern for his grandchildren prompted him to start the petition.
“One of my grandsons started at Padua this year and they used to ride to school each day, but it was too dangerous trying to cross there,” said Fricker.
“So, they decided to catch the bus instead. It costs money, they get less exercise, and the governments are trying to encourage kids to walk and ride to school safely.”
Fricker said volunteers helped distribute petition forms and went door-to-door.
“We never had one disgruntled person,” said Fricker.
He said while they would like to see a major upgrade to the intersection, even simple improvements such as pedestrian crossings would make a major difference.
Fricker thanked the hundreds of people who have signed the petition and the local volunteers who helped collect signatures.
“I’d just like to thank everyone who signed it,” said Fricker.
“It’s now ready to go to the legislative assembly and we hope Parliament takes notice.”
Crewther also expressed his gratitude to those who have signed it, as well as acknowledging long-term advocates.
“I also thank the many residents who’ve advocated for fixes here for years, many who’ve had an incident or family members who’ve had an incident there,” said Crewther.
“I encourage everyone who cares about the safety of our community to support this petition.
“By adding your signature, you are helping send a clear message to the government that immediate safety improvements and a permanent upgrade to the Mornington-Tyabb Rd and Racecourse Rd intersection are needed to protect residents and prevent future tragedies.”
Kirsten Lim-How from the Department of Transport and Planning asked that the following be attributed to a Department of Transport and Planning spokesperson:
“This roundabout has traffic islands on all four exits to ensure pedestrian and driver safety.”
“There’s also several signs approaching this intersection, warning motorists about possible pedestrians in the area.”
Lim-How noted Mornington-Tyabb Rd is managed by the Department of Transport and Planning while Racecourse Rd is under the management of Mornington Peninsula Shire.
Lim-How said any feedback shared is considered as part of their management of Victoria’s road network.
