A RESIDENT has expressed concerns over a growing pile of rubbish on Nepean Hwy in Mornington.
The rubbish pile is on the corner of Nepean Hwy and Oakbank Rd, opposite Eagle St.
Alistair Cuming, who lives off Nepean Hwy, said the pile has been continuously increasing in size over the past six months.
“All the big roadworks are happening, and there’s a bus stop on the road, and it’s just becoming a regular dumping ground for people to dump rubbish,” said Cuming.
Cuming said he contacted Mornington Peninsula Shire three months ago.
“We told council about it three months ago, and it’s still there,” said Cuming.
He said the rubbish pile was not a good look for tourists visiting the peninsula.
“Here we are, trying to attract people down to the Mornington Peninsula, to come and spend a weekend, and it’s just absolutely disgusting with all sorts of rubbish being dumped there,” said Cuming.
He said he is concerned the growing amount of rubbish on the side of the road is a result of tip fees.
“The council is overcharging people to take rubbish to the rubbish tip,” said Cuming.
“People are not able to afford it. It’s ridiculous the costs the council’s charging people to go to the tip, and then the rubbish tip people, they’re not recycling stuff because they say, ‘Oh, we’ve got enough of that, you have to take it away and dump it somewhere else’.”
Mornington Peninsula Shire Acting Director, Dale Gilliate, said Nepean Hwy and any adjoining nature strips and reserves are owned and managed by the Victorian government.
“Council has reported this matter to the state government, and we will continue to advocate for appropriate maintenance of state-managed roads and roadside areas,” said Gilliate.
When contacted by The News, the Department of Transport and Planning said any maintenance, including the removal of rubbish around the bus stop on Nepean Hwy, is the responsibility of the local council.
“We urge everyone to dispose of their rubbish responsibly and be mindful of the impacts roadside dumping has on the environment,” said a Department of Transport and Planning spokesperson.
