A FOOTBALL match between the Frankston and Mornington juniors was played on Saturday last in the Frankston park when, after an interesting game the visitors suffered defeat by 10 points. Mr W. Cain umpired satisfactorily. We understand that Mornington has issued a challenge to play Frankston at Somerville, the losers to pay for a dinner. If the challenge is accepted an interesting game should result. *** IN the 407th and 408th casualty lists, recently published by the Defence department appear the names of two Peninsula soldiers who have made the supreme sacrifice – Pte. E. E. Cook of Somerville and…

THE world game at its highest level in Australia may be coming to the south-east region. Frankston and Mornington Peninsula councils have both thrown their support behind a regional bid to start a professional A-League football team. The bid, codenamed “Team 11”, is one of 15 lodged to gain a license for entry into Australia’s top football league. The bid, launched in June last year, is designed to represent the whole of the south-east Melbourne region, playing games out of a planned $170 million stadium next to Dandenong Station. Mornington Peninsula Shire mayor Cr Bryan Payne said that the aspiring…

DIVISION TWO DROMANA’S undefeated start to the year nearly came undone in a scrappy contest at home, as they were almost overrun by a plucky Langwarrin side in MPNFL Division Two action on Saturday. Dromana, who pumped their opposition by over 100 points last week, started well to take a 13-point lead into quarter-time but were put on the back foot as Langwarrin struck back to cut the deficit to just one goal at the main break. The third quarter was all Dromana, but despite their dominance, they couldn’t punish Langwarrin on the scoreboard, as they only scored two goals…

DIVISION ONE SORRENTO have maintained their spot on the top of the MPNFL Division One ladder with a thrilling two-point victory over Edithvale-Aspendale on Saturday. The highly anticipated clash between the league’s first and third placed teams took place at Sorrento’s David Macfarlane Reserve, and it was the home side that came rushing out of the gates with a strong first term. Despite looking the stronger team with a two-goal lead at the first break, it took no time at all for Edithvale-Aspendale to work their way back into the contest, thanks in part to their accuracy in front of…

A MEETING of the Frankston residents was held on 17th September, 1917, to decide upon a site on which to plant an honor avenue of trees, to commemorate the self–sacrifice and bravery of each true Frankstonite, who heard the call of his country in distress, and who hurried across the seas to stand in the ranks with the men of our dear Motherland, side by side with the just nations of the earth to stop the enemy in their dream of world supremacy. After the most painstaking deliberation and exhaustive discussion of the suitability of the various roads leading into…

DIVISION TWO IT was a weekend of vastly contrasting games in MPNFL Division Two action, as two matches were decided by a solitary point while two matches were decided by margins of over 80. At Ballam Park, Karingal suffered an almighty scare as Red Hill battled hard to nearly upset their second placed opponents. The lead swung back and forth throughout the match, and going into three-quarter time it looked as if an upset was on the cards as Red Hill held a seven point lead away from home. In a nail biting finish, Karingal were able to just gain…

DIVISION ONE AFTER interleague action saw MPNFL football take a break last weekend, Division One football returned with a bang on Saturday in a day of shocking results. The biggest turn up of the round came from Olympic Oval, where Rosebud took on a normally dependable Frankston YCW at home. Frankston YCW were coming off their first loss of the season last round against Pines, and would have been keen to stamp their authority with a dominant performance against lowly ninth placed Rosebud. Despite that, Rosebud did well to hang in the game with their stronger opponents, only trailing by…

DIVISION TWO A TWO point thriller between Red Hill and Rye was the pick of the games in MPNFL Division Two football this weekend. Eventual winners Rye were comfortably ahead for most of the day, but a last quarter fight back from Red Hill almost soured their day. Going into the last quarter, Rye held a comfortable 29 point lead, with their opponents only managing to have kicked a paltry two goals and seven behinds. Red Hill however looked a different side after the last break, and piled on five goals to one in a thrilling last quarter that saw…

DIVISION ONE IT was a week of firsts in the MPNFL Division One competition this weekend with Frankston YCW slipping up for the first time this season, going down in a shock loss at home to Pines on Saturday. C. E. GOMM, ranger at Somerville, stated in the Shire Council Meeting that be had impounded Mr Martin’s cow and had been called everything but a gentleman as a consequence. One of the things said was that he was “a dirty loafer for a dirty job”. That people could say such things of his job was no good to him. On the motion of Crs Unthank and Longmuir it was decided that Martin be written to and told that he must make a public apology, failing which further action would be taken. *** TROOPER F. A Gould, son of Mr…

WORK has started to restore a 150-year-old Anglican church at Moorooduc. The church, built in 1863, had been left unused for nearly two decades before builder Stephen Foster decided it was worth saving. “There would only be a few buildings older than this one on the whole of the peninsula,” he said “It was sold off and locked up about 17 years ago, before that the local comunity would come down to look after it because of how important it was to them. Since then there’s been no maintenance, and it was just about ready to fall over. “It’s a…

LEAVING Dandenong on Friday afternoon for Wonthaggi, Lieutenant M. H. Bolton, recruiting officer for Flinders, with Sergeants E. J. Coyle and R. Middleton had a most exciting experience in their new Ford recruiting car. After leaving Lang Lang the officers struck very bad roads, and decided to leave the main road and take a side track. It was dark and after looking over the road in daylight, it was seen that the car was but a few feet from a death trap in three very bad places. At one point the car had been was only a few inches from…

The kids love it and they love the Red Hill Show. It started…

WE call special attention to an advertisement in another column of a public meeting, to consider the best means of perpetuating the memory of the late Sir John Madden amongst us. Since the Franskton man’s lamented death there has been singularly unanimous public expression of opinion, both in the Press and otherwise, of his many virtues as Lieutenant Governor and as Chief Justice of Victoria. Many tributes to his upright personal character have also appeared. It has been very fully recognised that in all his actions and in his many public utterances, he always was on the side of right,…

TWO miles out of Mornington, the body of an unknown man was found on Tuesday afternoon by Constable Kerr. Nearby were discovered two packets of strychnine, one of which had apparently been used. Deceased had a heavy bushy moustache; and was dressed in a grey sac suit, black woollen socks elastic “slip-on” boots and a cotton shirt and singlet. *** PROFOUND regret was expressed when the news of the death of Sir John Madden, Chief Justice of Victoria…

SOMETHING should be done at once by “our city fathers” with reference to the state of some of the drains in Frankston. The present state of affairs is disgraceful, and constitutes a serious menace to the health of the people of Frankston. In the right-of-way leading from Bay street into Thompson street, drainage from a number of houses flows, and although a drain of sorts has been made, there does not appear to be enough fall to enable the drainage to reach the drain in Thompson street. At present the drain is just a series of stagnant evil-smelling pools, and…
