FRANKSTON sprinter Alexia Loizou has claimed victory at this year’s Stawell Gift, taking out the top prize in the women’s division. Ms Loizou said it was “a dream come true” to win the race. FRANKSTON and Mornington Peninsula police conducted 8243 preliminary breath tests and 168 preliminary drug tests and detected 16 drink drivers and nine drug drivers, as well as 246 other offences during Operation Nexus over Easter. A 19-year-old youth died after falling off the back of a ute in Heatherhill Road, Frankston, 2.40am Good Friday morning. Mornington Police have impounded a vehicle after its driver returned an alleged evidentiary breath test in Mornington this morning (29 April). An eagle eyed Sergeant spotted the Ford sedan exiting a licensed venue on Main Street just after 2am. Police intercepted the 20-year-old Sandhurst man in nearby Murray Street where he told police he was parking his car in the dark dead end street so it would be safe. MONASH University has announced a sponsorship deal with Mount Martha Junior Football Club. The two year sponsorship deal reinforces Monash’s commitment to supporting and building relationships in the community. THE man often called the Father of Sorrento will be the subject of an exhibition at The Sorrento Museum, 827 Melbourne Road, Sorrento, later this month and in May. RATEPAYERS have until Friday (26 April) to comment on Mornington Peninsula Shire Council’s proposed 2019/20 budget. The mayor Cr David Gill said he had already received “a lot of feedback” from beach box owners facing a rise from a flat $445 a year licence fee to up to $1200 (“Cashing in on beach boxes” The News 9/4/19). A ‘THINK tank’ discussion to help guide the direction of Mornington Peninsula Shire’s waste review will be held tomorrow night (Wednesday 24 April) at the Rosebud council chambers. It comes as the state government drags its feet on waste recovery and recycling processes following the ban on collections from China. The think tank is part of a push by the council to hear community ideas while developing a waste strategy that reflects industry changes as well as supporting the community, shire operations and the environment. A man has died after falling from the rear of a utility in Frankston early this morning. Police have been told that the 19-year-old Frankston man was sitting in the rear tray along with two other people. The man fell from the utility as it was travelling along Heatherhill Road just after 2.30am. He was conveyed to hospital but has since passed away. The driver and other passengers were not injured and are assisting police with their enquiries. Police are investigating after an incident in Frankston early this morning that has left a man with critical injuries. It is alleged a 19-year-old Frankston man was sitting in the tray of a ute along with two other people. The man fell from the ute as it was travelling along Heatherhill Road just after 2.30am. He sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital for treatment. The driver and other passengers were not injured and are assisting police with their enquiries. POLICE divers recovered the body of a Hastings man who drowned off Somers, Sunday 14 April. The man, 38, and a friend were kayaking when he fell out and disappeared about 11am. His mate, who by this time had paddled to shore, borrowed a phone from a passer-by and called 000 for help. Volunteer Marine Rescue and Coast Guard Western Port based at Hastings were on the scene within 12 minutes and, with the Police Air Wing high above, began a four hour search. AN apprentice based at the Long Island Point plant, Hastings, is the fourth generation of his family to work at Esso’s Western Port and Gippsland operations. Thomas Mutimer, 18, follows his father Paul, an operations supervisor, grandfather, Ron, who worked at the Barry Beach Marine Terminal, and his great-grandfather, who worked on the Glomar III drillship, to work for Esso, either at Long Island Point or in Gippsland. A 21-year-old Rye man has been charged with one count of culpable driving causing death and two counts of negligently causing serious injury after a fatal crash in Tootgarook early Friday 12 April. Seventeen-year-old Timothy Hocking died and four others were injured when a Mazda CX3 with five young people on board struck a tree near the intersection of Marshall and Field streets about 1.15am. A BOX Hill South man is facing serious assault charges after a gatecrasher was allegedly assaulted outside a party in Frankston-Flinders Road, Hastings, early Sunday 7 April. The 36-year-old is alleged to have hit a Bittern man, 21, over the head with a bag of stubbies causing serious facial injuries, including having his jaw broken in a number of places and several teeth broken. Police have located a body during the search for a missing kayaker in waters off Somers. It is believed a man was paddling with a friend at South Beach when he fell from his kayak and disappeared shortly before 11am. Police located the man’s kayak and paddle and later located a body about 3.30pm not far from where the kayaker went missing. The man is yet to be formally identified and police will prepare a report for the coroner.

Members of the Western Port Model Aircraft Club are gearing for their second open day at the airfield at 360 The Esplanade, Crib Point, Sunday 21 April. Model aircraft of all types, sizes and styles: from helicopters, jets, civilian and military type aircraft all based on the real thing and sounding just as good are flown from the airfield. A MAN who rifled through a bag on a bike chained up outside a Rosebud liquor store allegedly stole a $700 mobile phone, Thursday 14 February. WILLIAM Buckley is coming back to Rosebud on the 26 and 27 April. He is coming in the form of a chamber opera, locally devised by peninsula residents Antony Ransome (pictured), retired opera performer of thirty years, and renowned local historian Richard Cotter. The opera is based on the historic events of 1803 and 1835. This will be the first opera written and performed on the Mornington Peninsula. A BLACK Triumph motorcycle found at a Cranbourne West house is believed to be stolen. Dandenong police said a man at the house said he had recently bought the bike. Police inspecting the bike on 22 March saw that the engine number and registration plates had been filed off and removed. They said the man refused to provide details of the seller and was arrested and interviewed. Dandenong police are appealing for public help in identifying the owner of the bike. Police have issued a top 10 list their “most wanted”. The three women and seven men are all wanted on outstanding warrants and police believe they may be living on the Mornington Peninsula. A ROSEBUD Motor Boat Squadron member became suspicious when he noticed the club’s front gate had been forced open and a car and boat trailer hidden in bushes, 6.45am, Thursday 4 April. Club commodore Mike Hibbert arrived at the foreshore clubhouse soon after and the pair watched CCTV footage of two men arriving earlier that morning in a Ford Territory towing a Quintrex boat with Mercury outboard and cutting the bolt to the club’s yard. Twenty-two student dancers from the Mornington Peninsula, flew out this week to perform in the Dance the Magic parade at Disneyland Park, Anaheim, California. The students, aged eight to 42, have been practicing for weeks in the streets of an industrial estate at Rosebud The tour will also see them performing dance routines choreographed by Peninsula School of Dance teachers at Universal Studios and on Hollywood Boulevard. DOG owners are being asked to “tighten the leash” at nine Mornington Peninsula beaches. In a bid to “encourage residents to better manage dog behaviour and improve dog obedience”, Mornington Peninsula Shire and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) and management committees have “developed a comprehensive compliance program to regulate the behaviour of dogs on beaches to improve the amenity of our beaches”, according to the mayor, Cr David Gill. “This partnership allows us to apply all the existing rules and regulations across our beaches in a consistent manner which is a positive outcome for our community.”…

A RED Hill orchardist caught with 19 dead rainbow lorikeets in the back of his ute was fined $15,000 at Dromana Magistrates’ Court last week for shooting the birds and verbally abusing authorised officers. HASTINGS dog owners are being warned to be on the lookout for rat poison baits. Police said they received the first of a dog bait being left on the street on Wednesday 27 March from a man walking his dog along Tara Drive about 4.30am.
