A MAN was shot in the leg at Rosebud last week. Armed Crime Squad detectives are investigating the incident on Jetty Road, 9.10pm, Wednesday 26 May. A 38-year-old Rosebud man was airlifted to hospital with what police described as “serious non-life-threatening injuries”. A crime scene was established and detectives had the area in Jetty Road cordoned off on Thursday. MORNINGTON Peninsula Shire is investigating whether more planning controls are needed to protect the environmental values of the Balcombe Estuary Reserves. The estuary is one of the peninsula’s major waterways and regarded as a significant natural asset. The reserves are rich in biodiversity and offer picnic tables, playgrounds, fishing platforms and walking tracks and boardwalk alongside Balcombe Creek, extending from the bay to Nepean Highway and on to The Briars. SIX Mornington Youth Club gymnasts are on the Gold Coast representing Victoria at the Australian Gymnastic Championships, 13-26 May. Jordan Liang, Phoenix Petrovic, Jackson Findlay, Tom Hall and Will Shurey are competing in Men’s Artistic Gymnastics and Haylee Whitehead in the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics. The club’s Sarah Waterland and Ben Pocklington are coaches for the event. The club’s gymnasts, competing in national level 7 through to senior level, are eligible for selection onto state teams representing Victoria at national events. ABOUT 200 school students, parents and supporters at Mornington joined others across Australia in the first national school strike since COVID-19, Friday 21 May. Meeting at Mornington Park they demanded the federal government stop financing gas and coal projects, and instead invest in clean, renewable energy, secure jobs and “implement First Nations’ solutions to protect Country”. THE federal government says it will provide immediate financial assistance to women who “make the brave decision to leave a violent relationship”. ARTISTS from around Australia have been asked to create artworks and murals as part of a Mornington Peninsula Shire anti-graffiti project. To be created by qualified visual artists or art collectives, the chosen  artworks will tell “meaningful stories” about the peninsula on the one hand and act as a deterrent to graffiti vandals on the other. They will be displayed at two sites in Rosebud which are known as graffiti hotspots. DROMANA and Langwarrin CFA brigades are among the first in Australia to receive cutting-edge, battery operated road rescue equipment. The three new tools include a cutter, spreader and hydraulic ram. They are battery operated and don’t require an external power source as well as being waterproof allowing greater access to road crash victims, including in drains and waterways. The tools costing $214,000 were funded by the Transport Accident Commission and the CFA. Mornington Peninsula Crime Investigations Unit officers are investigating the theft of a jewellery case containing bespoke jewellery worth $20,000. A woman was packing up her stall at the Red Hill market on Arthurs Seat Road about 2pm on Saturday 1 May. A jewellery case containing approximately 300 rings, 20 bangles, 300 pairs of earrings and 20 necklaces was stolen whilst she was packing her car nearby. A SOMERVILLE man was airlifted to hospital following an alleged assault, Sunday, 9 May. Police were told the victim got out of his car on Station Street, Somerville, early and approached two men who appeared to have a “gripe” against him, 1.30am. During an argument the victim, 50, was allegedly struck to the head. He fell to the ground and hit his head on the road. The other men left the scene. A TRUCK rollover closed the left-hand lane of Peninsula Link south-bound for four hours, Monday 3 May. The cement mixer, loaded with 13 cubic metres of concrete weighing 13 tonnes, flipped after the driver tried to correct a drift into the inside lane. Sergeant Bruce Buchan, of Somerville Highway Patrol, said the truck veered into shrubbery and ploughed through a light pole, 2pm. The driver, a Springvale man, 56, was not injured in the incident and did not require hospital treatment. A P-PLATER who obtained her driver’s licence in December had it suspended for 11 months last week on drink-driving counts. The 18-year-old, who was driving south along Point Nepean Road, Rosebud, without lights, will be summonsed to appear at Dromana Magistrates’ Court at a later date. Rosebud Police spotted the white Ford Festiva at 3.30am, Saturday 1 May. The driver, of Mount Martha, was taken to Rosebud Police Station where she allegedly returned a breath test reading of 0.115 per cent. Her car was impounded for 28 days. ARTISTS along the Peninsula Studio Trail are opening their doors at the end of this month for an open studios weekend  (29, 30 May). IT seemed that former Australian chess champion Doug Hamilton appeared to be everywhere at once when  playing simultaneous exhibition matches against Mount Martha Chess Club members last week. Unfazed by the challenge, Hamilton was able to analyse the situation and gauge his next move as he went seamlessly from game to game. FIRE crews fought a house fire in Maxwell Street, Mornington, Friday afternoon 7 May. Two trucks from the Mornington brigade arrived within minutes of being alerted by multiple calls to 000. They found the rear of the house alight and were concerned the fire might spread to neighbouring properties. The blaze took 27 minutes to bring under control. THE state government has given Mornington Peninsula Shire money to hire 41 temporary staff as part of its Working for Victoria campaign. The new jobs are in volunteering, community houses, business liaison, health and wellbeing, events, seniors’ inclusion, township activation, community engagement, youth employment and creative industries. BORN and bred French Island resident Rose Scott has done it again. The 90-year-old was delighted to cut the ribbon to open the island’s new Coast Road bridge, Saturday 24 April, after opening the first bridge on almost the same spot near Tankerton Road about 30 years ago. MORNINGTON’S Jaksen Daddo, pictured, must have thought he had the weight of the world on his shoulders while training for Sunday’s Mother’s Day Classic and raising money for breast cancer research. The 26-year-old, who has been competing in strongman events and powerlifting for five years, was training hard outside the Mornington athletics track last Sunday. A $55,000 speed boat and trailer, pictured above, were stolen from the driveway of a Blairgowrie property, overnight Saturday 24 April. It is unknown how the offenders were able to connect the trailer to a tow vehicle in Fawkner Avenue as the folding drawbar connection was padlocked. Officers from Mornington Police have suspended the licence of a man after he was caught drink driving early this morning. The man was driving on Canadian Bay Road, Mount Eliza, when he hit two parked cars and a fence, around 4.30am. The driver then walked away from the crash prior to police arriving.
