Police were bowled over when they discovered a 75-year-old woman, who had driven the wrong way around a roundabout in Hastings, had a blood alcohol reading of more than double the legal limit. A concerned motorist alerted police to the woman after she was observed driving erratically in the Hastings area this afternoon. Police located her on the wrong side of a roundabout on Frankston – Flinders Road and High Street about 5pm. NAVY crews from HMAS Cerberus literally dropped in to Eastbourne Primary School last week to talk to years 5 and 6 pupils about a career in the armed forces. AFTER three years of negotiations, the environment group BERG Mt Martha has persuaded Mornington Peninsula Shire to spend $100,000 to reduce sediment entering Balcombe Estuary. CRAIGIE beach at Mt Martha remains closed during the day while extra rocks are brought in to protect the 50-year-old seawall. CRIB Point Cricket Club has been hit by intruders for the third time in the past few months. No cash was stolen in the early morning Friday 21 October break-in but Senior Sergeant Allan Paxton, of Mornington Peninsula CIU, said $2000 damage was caused when thieves forced the front sliding glass door and then smashed an internal roller door and shelving. SOME of the rarest plants on the Mornington Peninsula and French Island will be better protected under a $85,000 project between Trust for Nature and Parks Victoria. The state government money will go towards fauna population surveys, weed control, establishing herbivore exclusion zones, improved fencing, seed collection and conservation management plans. AN open day at HMAS Cerberus on Sunday gave thousands of visitors a rare glimpse of Navy life, as well as a great day out. Known as the Cradle of the Navy, the base has up to 800 staff and each year trains about 4000 members in all three defence forces. SOMERVILLE Primary School mum Leah Sherrin entered a competition to win the school a fully equipped mobile teaching kitchen valued at $25,000 – and she won. Mornington police are investigating the theft of a television from a Mornington supermarket last month. Investigators have been told a man and a woman attended the Bungower Road shopping centre on Friday 9 September just after 12pm. Whilst in the store, the man selected a 55 inch television and placed it near the front entrance. TOUGH new dog bans in the Mornington Peninsula National Park from Tuesday 1 November aim to help endangered hooded plovers, Parks Victoria says. WORKS to build a 97-metre rock revetment to protect Craigie beach’s ageing seawall have begun. The six-week works are part of the state government’s coastal environment program, which oversees protection and repair of the coastline. Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning’s coastal project officer Jacky Priestley said the works would help protect the Craigie beach seawall from strong waves. A $60 MILLION upgrade to South East Water’s Mt Martha Water Recycling Plant will provide an alternative source of water for local businesses and community organisations, while reducing the environmental impact of its water treatment processes. Eastern Victoria MP Daniel Mulino opened the upgraded facility last week and met with customers making use of the new recycled water supply. Construction of the tertiary treatment plant was central to the two-year project. It can deliver 26 mega-litres of Class A recycled water each day to farms, wineries, business and council facilities. MORNINGTON Peninsula Post Polio Support Group will celebrate 20 years of advocacy and referral for polio survivors in the Frankston and Mornington Peninsula on Tuesday 18 October. The group, previously led by Mt Martha resident Dennis Doull Lloyd, who died in February aged 83, brings polio survivors together to share friendship and stories. THE RSPCA will not be laying charges against the Ace-Hi ranch in Boneo, which was raided by inspectors in May. As reported in The News, the RSPCA visited the Boneo Rd property amid claims by a former manager of under-feeding and overworking of horses. At the time, the RSPCA said it had investigated “a number of welfare concerns at Ace-Hi in the past decade” as well as more recent reports raising concerns for the welfare of horses on the property.
