Emergency crews are on the scene of a giant blaze that has destroyed the basketball stadium in Somerville this morning. The alarm was raised shortly before 7.30am and the fire quickly spread. Units were called in from the surrounding area, but nothing could be done to save the structure, which has been completely destroyed. By 9am, with the fire still burning. the roof of the stadium had collapsed. BUNGOWER Rd in Mornington was blocked to through traffic for nine hours, Thursday, after a collision between a car and a truck. The man driving the Toyota Prado was trapped inside for more than an hour and his car written off in the incident, which forced the closured of the road between Racecourse Rd and Moorooduc Hwy, 2.30-11.30pm. PUPILS and staff at Crib Point Primary School have designed and built a practical tribute to the six Word War I soldiers who attended their school. ROSEBUD West residents opposed to changing the suburb’s name to Capel Sound have a month to lodge objections with the Registrar of Geographic Place Names. They can object either by saying the naming authority did not consider the objections during its deliberations, or the proposal does not reasonably conform to the Registrar’s guidelines. THE state government has signed a memorandum of understanding with Melbourne University to establish a marine research centre in part of the heritage listed former quarantine station despite a master plan for the future use of Point Nepean National Park not being due for release until later this year. The agreement means that the university will receive $2.1m over six years from the National Environmental Science Program towards establishing a National Centre for Coasts and Climate (NCCC). Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate missing 15-year-old Chloe Hyde. Chloe has been missing since February and police have concerns for her due to the length of time she has been missing and her age. Police believe that Chloe communicated with a friend via Facebook in March indicating that she was in the Hastings area.
